What is GeoCapsule?
GeoCapsule is a unique privacy tool that allows you to encrypt a digital message and tie it to a specific real-world GPS location. The message is stored in a special .gseal file that can only be decrypted and read when the recipient is physically within a close radius (50 meters) of the location where it was "sealed."
History of this Feature
The concept of geocaching and digital dead-drops has been around since the early days of GPS technology. GeoCapsule takes this idea and adds a layer of privacy and intrigue by using location as the "key" for encryption. Instead of relying solely on a password, it uses the geographic coordinates to derive the encryption key. This feature was created to explore a novel form of cryptography and provide a fun, private way to link digital information to physical places.
Who Commonly Uses This Feature?
This tool is perfect for creating digital scavenger hunts, location-based games, or private messages tied to meaningful places (like an anniversary spot). It's used by people looking for a creative way to share secrets, as well as by those interested in cryptography and location-based technologies.
How to Use GeoCapsule
- Seal a Capsule: Select "Seal" mode. Type your secret message. Set the target location by entering the Latitude and Longitude or clicking "Use Current" to capture your GPS coordinates. Click "Seal & Download Capsule" to save a
.gsealfile. - Share the File: Send the downloaded
.gsealfile to your recipient. - Unseal a Capsule: The recipient must go to the physical location. On this page, they select "Unseal" mode, upload the
.gsealfile, and allow the browser to access their location. If they are within 50 meters of the target, the message will be revealed.
Important Note: This feature is completely private. Your message and location are never sent to a server.
